Temporary Abode: Aung Mingalar Hotel, Bagan Myanmar

04:00 02/05/2014 Bagan had lured global tourists enamored to its centuries old thousand temples spread along the red plains. The spike of visitor enables their tourism related business to thrive. But despite of tourists boon, we noticed the missed opportunity of catering the average spenders. It limits our search to a handful of budget accommodation. If not a dorm type, it would be a high end like luxurious Villas with private pools. Left with few choices after looking for pros and cons. We settled to a mid range hotel located in Nyaung U as our temporary abode.

Shwezigon Temple on plain sight from the Aung Mingalar Hotel
Aside from budget, location was another reason we considered Aung Mingalar Hotel. This hotel is in between the city center and century-old Buddhist temples. It’s  just opposite to Shwezigon temple, an imposing pagoda much like to Shwedagon in Yangon. It is also close to Irrawaddy River, the largest river in the country.

Check In

We arrived at Bagan during the wee hours which made us wait till morning once the reception open. We’d given  an option to leave our baggage so we can explore freely and witness sunrise. But an unprecedented circumstance forced us to drop that opportunity.

Check In    Time :   1:00 PM (Old Bagan Myanmar Time, +6:30 GMT)
Check Out Time : 11:00 AM (Old Bagan Myanmar Time, +6:30 GMT)

We’re greeted by friendly ladies at the reception masked with heavy yellowish powdered on their cheeks. They attended our request ( wifi, early check in, spacious room) with no complaints while doing their daily tasks.

Our Room

We occupied their Superior Twin since there was no Double room available that time. The room is quite capacious for a Southeast Asian standard. Two single beds are placed side by side with equally soft pillows with themed bed scarves.

The hotel has 24 Rooms with Superior and Deluxe Courtyard. The only difference between these two types are the room size, interiors and garden.

Deluxe Courtyard

Aung Mingalar has a good selection of breakfast meal despite of being a mid range hotel. They served fried rice, stir fried noodles, toast (Butter or Jam), Eggs, Coffee, Tea, Juice, and Fruits.

We had an unforgettable breakfast over here. Sharing the table with other Filipino travelers Susan and Celeste who are based in Singapore. Enjoying our breakfast chatting about our travel, life as an OFW, investment and life in general. They are the same duo who comforted us during our travel mishap. Missed you two!

Parking Space
Overall we had a good impression on this hotel, the staff were hospitable and extra friendly. They even allowed us to hang out for half day at reception using their strong Wifi connection while waiting for our evening bus.

We recommend Aung Mingalar Hotel for value of money and great location.
